The actual distribution system is far more complex
than illustrated here.
In a very general sense there is a superior stream of connections
(dominated by the magnocellular system) concerned with the
location
and motion of objects and. The inferior stream of connections (dominated
by the parvocellular system) is concerned with the form and colour of
objects. This inferior stream is what's known as the VENTRAL
STREAM . Shown in the above figure by blue arrows. The pathway
shown in green responsible for motion is known as the Dorsal Stream.
Aspects such as colour and depth are processed in parallel with form and
movement.
Although the details are incompletely understood, and the independence
of
the two systems is far from total, in general, the Ventral System (colour,
detailed
form) projects to more ventral portions of cortex and the dorsal system
(location,
movement) to more dorsal portions.
