Rod Brown 98060540 03/21/01 Interpretation of Results: This experiment set out to investigate the existence or non-existence between verbal, spatial, and/or pattered movement memory tasks. Thus it was essentially an investigation into the relationships within the working memory. Baddeley (1988) has demonstrated the existence of a three component Working Memory Model (Allard 2001). There is first the central executive that directs the activities of the slave systems. The slave systems have been identified as having individual roles in working memory. He first slave system referred to as the articulatory or phonological loop which has been shown to hold verbalized information and the visuo-spatial sketch pad (VSSP) which has been shown to hold information about spatial material. These systems work independently and therefore through experimentation have not been shown to correlate. There arises a problem when looking at different types of movements however. Memory of movement to a specific place is movement independent, in the sense that the goal is to get the object to the correct position. A patterned form of movement on the other hand, is not dependent on position but rather imitation or replication of movement. The question then propelling the purpose of this experiment was to determine whether there is evidence of a third slave system within the working memory responsible for remembering/ recalling patterned movement. Smyth, Pearson and Pendelton (1988) have demonstrated evidence for a third slave system, responsible for patterned movement through their suppression experiments (Allard 2001). In this experiment, an investigation into the possible relationships between the aspects of the memory systems was conducted. In accordance with that found by Smyth et al., no correlation should be found between spatial, verbal or memory systems within the subjects measured. In fact, through analysis of the results, that is what has been found. As expected though BaddeleyТs work, there is minimal correlation between spatial or verbal memory spans, but more significantly there is minimal correlation between spatial and movement, and movement and verbal memory spans. There is however, more correlation between movement and verbal memory spans as opposed to spatial and movement memory spans. In conclusion, from the results there is a definite distinction between spatial movement tasks and patterned movement tasks, indicating that the VSSP is not responsible for memory span tasks for patterned movements. Because there is a greater, yet still not significant, relationship between memory span in verbal and movement patterned task, greater reserve must be taken in disregarding the interaction of the articulatory or phonological loop in patterned movement tasks. Thus, from this experiment it can be shown that there is evidence of a third slave system responsible for memory span tasks requiring movement pattern recollection. Reference: Allard, Fran.
