Overview of Memory

Sensory memory is comprised of three components; one for the visual system, one for the auditory system and one for the tacile system.  They have the ability to hold large amounts of information for a very short period of time.

Short term memory (STM) has a limited capacity for holding information.  In Baddeley's Model of Working Memory, there are three components.
Central Executive - integrates information from the slave systems, plans and controls behaviours
Articulatory Loop - holds verbal information
Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad - holds spatial information

Long term memory (LTM) is seen as a series of memory modules with each module responsible for holding different sorts of information.
Episodic & Autobiographical LTM - memory for specific  events
Sematic LTM - knowledge base of facts
Declarative LTM - memory for facts
Procedural LTM - memory of how to perform tasks
