Motion Parallax


One of the most relevant monocular cues is motion parallax

As we travel through the environment the patterns of movement change as a function of proximity. Demonstrating this concept is the diagram below, which you can try out on your own: fixate on your fist arms length away and hold your finger in front of your fist and turn your head. The objects beyond your fist will travel in the same direction as your head movements, whereas your finger will appear to move opposite.


This can be demonstrated by examining the effects of traveling in a vehicle 


while looking out the vehicle window all objects in the distance seem to be moving with you

all objects in close proximity seem to be traveling in the opposite direction
